Why Should You Support Bluebirds? Bluebirds typically seek natural cavities, such as in old trees or woodpecker holes, to build their nests. However, they are facing increasing habitat loss due to deforestation, land commercialization, and aggressive competition from invasive bird species for the same nesting sites. Installing a well-built bird house (or a trail of them) is a great way to restore and boost local bluebird populations.

Determining the Right Number of Bird Houses The number of bird houses you need depends on the size of your property. For a small backyard, mounting two bird houses 5-20 feet apart will allow two different species to nest in them peacefully (e.g., Bluebirds in one and Tree Swallows, Titmice, Wrens, or Chickadees in the other). For larger properties, you can create a bluebird trail of any size by mounting nestboxes about 300 feet apart, in singles or in pairs.

NABS-Compliant Features Our bird houses are made from 3/4" thick western cedar wood (untreated) and feature: - A 2 1/2" roof overhang on the front - Up-drilled air vents - Fledgling kerfs - Recessed floor and front door - Drain holes in the floor - A 5" drop (distance from bottom of the entry hole to the floor) - Entry hole and floor sizes ideal for eastern, western, and mountain bluebirds - A double roof to protect the interior from extreme temperatures - A 15 or 22 square inch floor size to attract various species

Predator Guards and Weather Protection To prevent predators from enlarging the entry hole, we extended it by 1" and added a stainless steel guard. We also created a set of 5 metal guards (not included) that allow you to adjust the hole size to attract or exclude different bird species.

Additionally, our bird houses feature weatherproof joints, a double roof, and a unique double-floor design to address water and blowfly larvae issues.
